Female performers like Lady Saw, Lady G, Sister Nancy, and Tanya Stephensemerged on the scene, adding balance to a field of dancehall royalty.
The dancehall superstars included ShaggyMr. VegasSean Paul, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, and the king of the dancehall Beenie Man. This selection features original dancehall lions like Big Youth, Beres Hammond, Barrington Levy, and Super Cat alongside the young lions of the dancehall Anthony B, Luciano, Spragga BenzSizzla, Lutan Fyah, Maxi PriestT.O.K., and Yami Bolo.

World of Reggae Music Collection: Dancehall Reggae–The Old School

In this edition of The World of Reggae Music Collection the selector dives into the deep catalog of  Dancehall Reggae. This first exploration of the dancehall pulls from the Old School Dancehall tunes from the late 1970s through the 1990s. The kings of the dancehall make the list here, including Barrington Levy, Shabba Ranks, Cocoa Tea, Tenor Saw, Yellowman, and Super Cat. Unique voices, fat riddims, and heavy bass lines make for great dancehall reggae music.

From the creative stylings of Junior ReidTiger and Cutty Ranks to the rough-shod rhyming of Bounty Killer, Capleton, and Buju Banton to the smooth silky voices of Beres Hammond, Sanchez, and Frankie Paul, dancehall music filled the air in Jamaica where its was played over thundering soundsystems with speakers stacked mountain high. This collection of old school dancehall songs includes favorites from Half Pint, Johnny Ousborne, Eek-A-Mouse, Ninjaman, and Chaka Demus & Pliers, as well as the deeper cuts from classic dancehall artists like Early B, Anthony Red Rose, Brigadier Jerry and Super Beagle.

World of Reggae Music Collection: Boss Deejays

BOSS DEEJAYS

In this edition of the World of Reggae Music Collection the selector focuses in on the boss deejays. This list is heavily laden with the top ranking deejays U Roy, Big Youth, Dennis Alcapone, and I Roy. In this edition U-Roy “The Originator” especially shines. Also the unique stylings of Yellowman, Eek-A-Mouse, Ranking Joe, and Trinity appear alongside the famous female deejay Sister Nancy. And make sure to check out the deejay Early B and his amazing story songs “History Of Jamaica” and “Bible Story.” The boss deejays are the fathers and mothers of rap music. They were the first to take instrumental versions and dubs, and toast over the top of them. Thus these toasters are not only important to the foundations of reggae music, but also to the roots of rap and hip-hop music. Plus if you listen closely there is a message. There are many life lessons that can be learned from these Boss Deejays. Yes in fact these toasters make good teachers. So Remember when you ride like lightning, you crash like thunder. And if you can’t be good then you must be careful.

The Who at the Super Bowl Half-Time Show

The Who opened the halftime show with “Pinball Wizard.” Then green lazer lights flooded the stadium in Miami as the band broke into “Baba O’Riley.” After a Roger Daltrey harmonica solo the group transitioned into the classic “Who Are You.”  Pete Townshend and the boys still got it. A rocking  “Won’t Get Fooled Again” concluded the show.

Keller Williams and That 1 Guy play Granada Theatre in Dallas, Texas

That 1 Guy and his magic pipe stole the show at the Granada Theatre this Friday night in Dallas. Mike Silverman aka That 1 Guy is a classically trained double bass player from the San Francisco Conservatory. He has developed a new instrument–the magic pipe. A seven foot tall collection of steel plumbing pipes and joints, orchestral bass, and electronics, the magic pipe makes some crazy and amazing sounds. You must see Silverman’s creation in order to fully grasp the genius of this new instrument. Crazy tunes like “Weasel Potpie” grip the audience and make them dance. Furthermore when he added a wobbling handsaw to play “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” minds were blown.

Like Keller Williams, That 1 Guy is a one-man band. Keller joined That 1 Guy at the end of the set for a rip-rollicking futuristic jam. Keller Williams plays bass, guitars, and a drum machine infusing funk, reggae, and psychadelia into his looping sounds. He also dubs his music live on stage. Williams picks brilliant cover tunes making them original compositions. Williams reggaefied Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.” And Nirvana’s “All Apologies,” the Grateful Dead’s “Brown Eyed Women,” and Phish’s “Birds of a Feather” all made the setlist. Keller mixed in originals too, playing crowd favorites like “cadillac,” “Breathe,” “Freeker By The Speaker,” “Apparition,” and “Best Feeling.”
