The Drinking song that became the Star Spangled Banner

The Jeffersonian Era would transform the nation adding millions of acres to the nation with the Louisiana Purchase.  But, the British were not done with their former colony and in fact they would come back with a vengeance to fight the United States in the War of 1812. After burning Washington, DC to the ground the British soldiers were determined to march onto Baltimore, New Orleans, and other major American cities.

To many it seemed that America’s experiment with democracy would be cut short. Fortunately, the Americans held back the British at Fort McHenry saving Baltimore. Francis Scott Key immortalized this battle in a poem called “The Star Spangled Banner.” Later, it would be set to the music of a song from the tavern, “a drinking tune,” and it would become our national anthem. “The Star Spangled Banner” has been sung, played, and interpreted by millions of artists, including an iconic version by Jimi Hendrix at the Woodstock Music Festival in 1969.
