Rodney King

The selector put together this mix of tracks in remembrance of the 1992 riots in Los Angeles sparked by the brutal police beating of Rodney King. With Trump’s America on the horizon these songs might be part of the sound of the future revolution.

Lovers’ Rock for Valentine’s Day

LOVERS’ ROCK FOR VALENTINES

Here Are 200 Lovers’ Rock songs for the perfect Valentine’s Day Mix.

Since the early origins of reggae music, love songs have formed an important part of the musical landscape. The sultry voices of Beres HammondKen Boothe, and Dennis Brown alongside the  falsetto voices of Courtney John and Bitty McLean bring real soul power to lovers’ rock. And the reggae legends Gregory Isaacs, Delroy WilsonJohn HoltSugar Minott, and Freddie McGregor shined in this style.

Plus, many reggae supergroups, including Bob Marley & the Wailers and Steel Pulse have made some beautiful lovers’ rock tunes, while some artists like Maxi Priest, Jah Cure, Peter Hunningale, Gyptian, and Tarrus Riley have relied on the genre producing a plethora of lovers’ selections. And there are some classic cuts here, including Tyrone Taylor’s “Cottage in Negril” and Terry Linen’s “No Time To Linger.”

Some artists surprise their audiences with softer sides, for example, roots reggae artists Alborosie, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, and Kymani Marley, dancehall singjays Busy Signal and Vybz Kartel, and the R&B “overweight lover” Heavy D  have recorded very sweet songs for the ladies. And there are many women, including Etana, Cherine AndersonEstelle, and Hortense Ellis, who have recorded lush reggae songs filled with love. From Alton Ellis to Cocoa Tea to Sean Paul, love music has been an integral part of reggae.

World of Reggae Music Collection: Reggae Electronica Fusion

The World of Reggae Music Collection: Reggae inna Golden Oldies Version

GOLDEN OLDIES VERSION

In this edition of the World of Reggae Music Collection the selector uncovers some of the greatest reggae cover songs. This particular edition focuses on the Golden Oldies. Form pop sensations Elvis Presley, Neil DiamondBobby Darin, and Fats Domino to the singer/songwriters Bob Dylan and James Taylor to  the rock and roll greats like the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and the Animals, to the soul crooners like Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and Bill Withers this compilation of tracks explores the greatest reggae versions of pop hits.

Groups like Three Dog Night, The Association, and The Archies dominated American and British pop charts. And many Jamaicans took these tunes and transformed them into Jamaican reggae hits. One of my favorites in this edition is Bob Marley’s cover of the Archies tune “Sugar Sugar.”  Some of the greatest reggae performers including Gregory Isaacs, Jimmy Cliff,Toots & The Maytals, Dennis Brown, and John Holt took on these rock and roll legends and covered excellent pop songs from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.  And of course, Ub40 made an entire career at the art of the reggae oldies cover, making smash top 40 hits out of Sonny And Cher‘sI Got You Babe” and Elvis Presley’s(I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You.”

The World of Reggae Music Collection: Reggae inna Golden Oldies Version

The World of Reggae Music Collection–UB40 Reggae: The Original Versions

In this section of the World of Reggae Music Collection the selector explores the influence and influences of Ub40. This particular edition focuses on the original reggae bands and musicians that UB40 covered. The boys from Birmingham, England made reggae music popular from the European continent to the backfields of north Texas. And more importantly it made inquisitive listeners follow the tracks back to their original performers. The first time many people heard “Johnny Too Bad” and “Cherry Oh Baby” was on the album Labour Of Love, the same album that featured the hit single “Red Red Wine.” Music fans around the world followed many of these tracks back to their Jamaican roots. In the stacks of records they found the amazing sounds of The Slickers, The Melodians, John Holt, Lord Creator, and Eric Donaldson. Ub40 turned many of these delightful tracks into electric 80s pop music for the masses. Albeit “Red Red Wine” is a Neil Diamond song, Jamaican artists like Tony Tribe had already made “Red Red Wine” wicked reggae music. Here in this list are the original reggae tracks from which UB40 found inspiration. From the reggae legends like Bob Marley and The Wailersand Jimmy Cliffto the more obscure artists like Boy Friday and Ken Parker, Ub40 reintroduced some of the greatest 60s and 70s reggae tunes to the modern world.

Guru – “The Experimental Fusion of Hip-Hop and Jazz”

Loungin'

Unfortunately, one of the greatest American rap and hip-hop MCs died this month. Guru was an extraordinary rapper. He was both gritty and smooth. He rose to fame rhyming for the famed rap group Gang Starr. The old school rap duo featured Guru on the mic and DJ Premieron the turntables.  I was a big fan of Gang Starr. And I followed Guru into his solo work, especially the first Jazzmatazz album. If you haven’t heard of Gang Starr check out their songs “Blowin’ Up The Spot” and “Full Clip.”

Guru was one of those rappers that kept in touch with the roots of his craft. I often saw him on the local cable network in Austin, visiting recreational centers in East Austin. He got kids involved in the hip hip culture on the ground level. He was definitely a grassroots artists. A man who explored the musical world from the bottom up and not from the top down. This viewpoint gave his music real soulpower.

Keith Elam aka Guru will probably be most remembered for his multi-volume Jazzmatazz collaborations with famed jazz and pop music artists. The first Jazzmatazz album was an instant classic. Jazz artists like Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, Branford Marsalis, and Lonnie Liston Smith joined Guru for a fusion of jazz and hip hop. Guru explored this blend creating genius tracks like “Loungin’.'” Another one of my favorite songs on this album is the cut “No Time To Play” with Ronny Jordanand Dee C. Lee. The track “Le Bien, Le Mal” mixes rap and jazz music as well as French and English lyrics. The French rapper Mc Solaar shared the mic with Guru on this cutting-edge experimental Franco-American rap-jazz tune.

Guru fused rap with a diversity of sounds and artists through his Jazzmatazz collection, performing with such notable musicians as Ini Kamoze, Erykah Badu, Macy Gray, the Roots, Junior Reid, Les Nubians, and Herbie Hancock. From rap to  jazz to R&B to reggae this rapper crossed musical boundaries and set new trends.

Guru made substantial inroads into the reggae genre as well, especially on a collaboration with Stephen Marley. Marley and Guru reworked the Bob Marley classic “Johnny Was” into a beautiful mix of rap and reggae music on the album Chant Down Babylon. And check out the killer hit on the album Jazzmatazz, Vol. 4: The Hip Hop Jazz Messenger – Back To The Future entitled “Stand Up (Some Things’ll Never Change)” with the talented dancehall wordsmith Damian Marley.
