The World of Reggae Music Collection–Reggae UB40: The UB40 Versions

The World of Reggae Music Collection: Lover’s Rock

LOVER’S ROCK

In this edition of the World of Reggae Music Collection the selector explores the sweet side of reggae music. Since the early origins of reggae music, love songs have formed an important part of the musical landscape. The sultry voices of Beres Hammond, Ken Boothe, and Dennis Brown alongside the  falsetto voices of Courtney John and Bitty McLean bring real soul power to lover’s rock. And the reggae legends Gregory Isaacs, John Holt, Sugar Minott, and Freddie McGregor shined in this style.

Many legends of reggae, including Bob Marley & the Wailers and Jimmy Cliff have made some beautiful lover’s rock tunes, while some artists like Maxi Priest, Peter Hunningale, and Tarrus Riley have relied on the genre producing a plethora of lover’s selections. And there are some classic cuts here, including Tyrone Taylor’s “Cottage in Negril” and Terry Linen’s “No Time To Linger.”

Some artists surprise their audiences with softer sides, for example, roots reggae artist Alborosie and dancehall singjay Busy Signal have recorded sweet songs for the ladies. And there are many women, including EtanaMarcia Griffiths and Hortense Ellis, who have recorded lush reggae songs filled with love. From Alton Ellis to Sean Paul, love music has been an integral part of reggae.

World of Reggae Music Collection: Dancehall Reggae–The Old School

In this edition of The World of Reggae Music Collection the selector dives into the deep catalog of  Dancehall Reggae. This first exploration of the dancehall pulls from the Old School Dancehall tunes from the late 1970s through the 1990s. The kings of the dancehall make the list here, including Barrington Levy, Shabba Ranks, Cocoa Tea, Tenor Saw, Yellowman, and Super Cat. Unique voices, fat riddims, and heavy bass lines make for great dancehall reggae music.

From the creative stylings of Junior ReidTiger and Cutty Ranks to the rough-shod rhyming of Bounty Killer, Capleton, and Buju Banton to the smooth silky voices of Beres Hammond, Sanchez, and Frankie Paul, dancehall music filled the air in Jamaica where its was played over thundering soundsystems with speakers stacked mountain high. This collection of old school dancehall songs includes favorites from Half Pint, Johnny Ousborne, Eek-A-Mouse, Ninjaman, and Chaka Demus & Pliers, as well as the deeper cuts from classic dancehall artists like Early B, Anthony Red Rose, Brigadier Jerry and Super Beagle.

The selector has also made lists of dancehall reggae music, including Classic Dancehall Tracks, New School Danechall Selections, and ruff riding Ragga singles. Please comment on the selections.

The World of Reggae Music Collection–Dub Reggae: Classic Dub

Classic Dub

Drums and Bass dominate in this edition of the World of Reggae Music Collection.  The selector explores the classic dub hits of Reggae Music. King Tubby, Lee Perry & The Upsetters, Scientist, Sly & Robbie, and Prince Jammy, the professionals of dub, found that the kids at the dancehalls and sound systems went wild for instrumental versions of tunes laced with echoes and other effects. Great musicians often soloed over the versions, such as saxophonist Tommy McCook and keyboardist/melodica player Augustus Pablo. This compilation of dub tracks includes some of the great reggae bands Roots Radics, The Upsetters, the Observers, The Aggrovators, Soul Syndicate, and The Dub Syndicate.
