Big Red And Barbacoa

The Top 40 Albums of June 2010

This month has offered a wide variety of musical formats. The selector dug into Navajo, Reggae, Rap, Rock, Roots, Electronica, Dancehall, and Jam Band music. June’s selection of reggae music includes the smooth dancehall vibes of Tippa Irie & The Far East Band,  Jamaican sensation Rootz Underground, the positive message laden Mishka, the one drop oriented Romain Virgo, and the prolific singjay Capleton. Plus there has been recently released a reggae celebration of The Who called Out Here in the Fields – Legends of Reggae Celebrate the Who featuring artists like Chalice, Toots & The Maytals, The Mighty Diamonds, Luciano, and Gregory Isaacs.

From San Antonio, Texas Hacienda makes original music on their summer friendly Big Red And Barbacoa. The Houston-based Geto Boys member Scarface dropped another hard hitting gangsta rap album. And the Texas country artists Jason Boland & The Stragglers released the full length LP High In The Rockies and  Cory Morrowreleased an EP entitled Ramblin’ Man.

The psychadelic country rock of Phosphorescent recalls the best of The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Byrds. While jam-band staple Widespread Panic released another listener friendly studio album titled Dirty Side Down, which is a rare feet among jam bands. And on a side note this June the selector heard for the first time the amazing vocal stylings of Navajo musical artist Radmilla Cody. Cody should be an American legend!

Finally for some rap check out the female Baltimore duo the Get ‘Em Mamis and Atlanta-based Outkast sensation Big Boi‘s new single Shutterbugg. Take a wild ride with the dub reggae infused electronica of Heyoka and feel the rollicking  jazz of drummer Mike Reed’s People Places & Things. And just in time for summer flip-flop rockers Jack Johnson, Xavier Rudd, and Citizen Cope all released new albums

The World of Reggae Music Collection: Collie Herb

COLLIE HERB

In this edition of the World of Reggae Music Collection the selecta explores the reggae songs dedicated to the ganja. It is believed that the term ganja came from India and from the Indians who migrated to Jamaica. Many of the great reggae artists performed songs about the herb, some taking the tunes to another level playing ganja anthems. From Bob Marley & the Wailers’ “Kaya” to Barrington Levy’s “Under Mi Sensi” to Peter Tosh’s anthem “Legalize It” the weed is a constant theme in reggae music.

According to Rastafarians, collie herb grew on the grave of the wisest man in history, King Solomon. For this reason the herb is to be smoked as a sacrament. Often the smoke is referred to as wine to be partaken in communion. The water pipe is called the chalice or cup from which the smoker draws or sups from the cup. Furthermore the great collie herb aids in meditation. The World of Reggae Music Collection presents the finest tunes about sensi.

World of Reggae Music Collection: Boss Deejays

BOSS DEEJAYS

In this edition of the World of Reggae Music Collection the selector focuses in on the boss deejays. This list is heavily laden with the top ranking deejays U Roy, Big Youth, Dennis Alcapone, and I Roy. In this edition U-Roy “The Originator” especially shines. Also the unique stylings of Yellowman, Eek-A-Mouse, Ranking Joe, and Trinity appear alongside the famous female deejay Sister Nancy. And make sure to check out the deejay Early B and his amazing story songs “History Of Jamaica” and “Bible Story.” The boss deejays are the fathers and mothers of rap music. They were the first to take instrumental versions and dubs, and toast over the top of them. Thus these toasters are not only important to the foundations of reggae music, but also to the roots of rap and hip-hop music. Plus if you listen closely there is a message. There are many life lessons that can be learned from these Boss Deejays. Yes in fact these toasters make good teachers. So Remember when you ride like lightning, you crash like thunder. And if you can’t be good then you must be careful.

World of Reggae Music: Roots and Culture

Rastaman

Red, gold, and green flags emblazoned with the Lion of Judah fly above swirling clouds of ganja smoke while pulsing bass and driving reggae riddims flow through sound systems stacked ten-feet high. This edition of the World of Reggae Music Collection is entitled Roots and Culture. This first volume of Roots and Culture features the Rastaman. The Rastaman is an integral part of Caribbean culture and the reggae movement.

Rita Marleyintroduced Robert Nesta Marley to the foundations of the Rastafarian religion or “way of life.” She had seen the Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie I on his visit to Jamaica and had been struck by the spirit on seeing what she believed to be an incarnation of God, Jah Rastafari. Bob Marley and The Wailers later became a great messenger of the “king’s music.”

Bob Marley and The Wailers, the I-Threes (Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Marcia Griffiths), Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailerall professed to the wisdom of Jah in their music. Not only did Marley and the Wailer family play roots and culture reggae, but so did the great rastaman icons Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, and Jacob Miller. The Rastafarian-inspired bands The Abyssinians, Black Uhuru, Aswad, Gladiators, The Melodians, The Mighty Diamonds, Steel Pulse, Culture,Wailing Souls, Third World, Israel Vibration, The Itals, and The Heptones rocked reggae for crowds of thousands of listeners and fired the souls and imaginations of millions of fans.

Not only the great reggae bands played tribute to the roots and culture of the rastaman, but so did the finest singjays from Dillinger, Barrington Levy, Ranking JoeSizzla, and Luciano to Buju Banton, Half Pint, Capleton, Anthony B, and Konshens. From the young to the old, from Tarrus Riley, Gyptian, Morgan Heritage, Alborosie, and Bushman to the old-school reggae originals of Jimmy RileyHorace Andy, Johnny Clarke, and Cornell Campbell, Rastafarian culture and reggae still captures the pulse of an Island people.

The World of Reggae Music–Vintage Reggae: Classic Reggae

Top Albums of November 2009

This month’s music selection varies from twangy country to roots reggae to experimental jazz-hip-hop and dub. Robert Glasper‘s Double Booked is chalk-full of creativity and musicianship.  Glasper, a pianist originally from Houston, Texas has performed with Erykah BaduThe Roots, Maxwell, and Mos Def. On this new album Glasper mixes hip-hop, jazz, and experimental music into a beautiful soundscape.
Conrad Crystal and Suga Roy have put together a fine album with help from some of reggae’s icons. The legendary Toots & The Maytals joins the duo on “God Bless You.” The singjay Gyptian performs “Jah Jah See Dem”  in tribute to Joseph Hill and Culture. The dancehall jam “She Call Mi Phone” features “king of the dancehall” Beenie Man and the amazing vocalist Barrington Levy. Deejays U Roy, Dillinger, and Big Youth join the fray while Reggae superstars Lee “Scratch” Perry, Max Romeo, Eek-A-Mouse, Marcia Griffiths, Dennis Brown, The Congos, and Inner Circle all lend their vocals. Even the amazing danechall duo Chaka Demus & Pliers makes an appearance on “Girl You Rock My World.”
The Stephen Marleyalbum Mind Control originally dropped more than a year ago. Now a newer acoustic version of the disc has been released called Mind Control Acoustic. The smooth beautiful track “Chase Dem” features Capleton layering rhymes through the original tune. Brothers Damian Marley and Julian Marley appear on the record as does rude boy Spragga Benz.
