The World of Reggae Music Collection: Reggae inna Golden Oldies Version

GOLDEN OLDIES VERSION

In this edition of the World of Reggae Music Collection the selector uncovers some of the greatest reggae cover songs. This particular edition focuses on the Golden Oldies. Form pop sensations Elvis Presley, Neil DiamondBobby Darin, and Fats Domino to the singer/songwriters Bob Dylan and James Taylor to  the rock and roll greats like the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and the Animals, to the soul crooners like Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and Bill Withers this compilation of tracks explores the greatest reggae versions of pop hits.

Groups like Three Dog Night, The Association, and The Archies dominated American and British pop charts. And many Jamaicans took these tunes and transformed them into Jamaican reggae hits. One of my favorites in this edition is Bob Marley’s cover of the Archies tune “Sugar Sugar.”  Some of the greatest reggae performers including Gregory Isaacs, Jimmy Cliff,Toots & The Maytals, Dennis Brown, and John Holt took on these rock and roll legends and covered excellent pop songs from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.  And of course, Ub40 made an entire career at the art of the reggae oldies cover, making smash top 40 hits out of Sonny And Cher‘sI Got You Babe” and Elvis Presley’s(I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You.”
