The World of Reggae Music Collection: Reggae inna Golden Oldies Version

GOLDEN OLDIES VERSION

In this edition of the World of Reggae Music Collection the selector uncovers some of the greatest reggae cover songs. This particular edition focuses on the Golden Oldies. Form pop sensations Elvis Presley, Neil DiamondBobby Darin, and Fats Domino to the singer/songwriters Bob Dylan and James Taylor to  the rock and roll greats like the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and the Animals, to the soul crooners like Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and Bill Withers this compilation of tracks explores the greatest reggae versions of pop hits.

Groups like Three Dog Night, The Association, and The Archies dominated American and British pop charts. And many Jamaicans took these tunes and transformed them into Jamaican reggae hits. One of my favorites in this edition is Bob Marley’s cover of the Archies tune “Sugar Sugar.”  Some of the greatest reggae performers including Gregory Isaacs, Jimmy Cliff,Toots & The Maytals, Dennis Brown, and John Holt took on these rock and roll legends and covered excellent pop songs from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.  And of course, Ub40 made an entire career at the art of the reggae oldies cover, making smash top 40 hits out of Sonny And Cher‘sI Got You Babe” and Elvis Presley’s(I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You.”

The World of Reggae Music Collection: Collie Herb

COLLIE HERB

In this edition of the World of Reggae Music Collection the selecta explores the reggae songs dedicated to the ganja. It is believed that the term ganja came from India and from the Indians who migrated to Jamaica. Many of the great reggae artists performed songs about the herb, some taking the tunes to another level playing ganja anthems. From Bob Marley & the Wailers’ “Kaya” to Barrington Levy’s “Under Mi Sensi” to Peter Tosh’s anthem “Legalize It” the weed is a constant theme in reggae music.

According to Rastafarians, collie herb grew on the grave of the wisest man in history, King Solomon. For this reason the herb is to be smoked as a sacrament. Often the smoke is referred to as wine to be partaken in communion. The water pipe is called the chalice or cup from which the smoker draws or sups from the cup. Furthermore the great collie herb aids in meditation. The World of Reggae Music Collection presents the finest tunes about sensi.

The World of Reggae Music Collection: Collie Herb

World of Reggae Music Collection: Dancehall Reggae–The Old School

In this edition of The World of Reggae Music Collection the selector dives into the deep catalog of  Dancehall Reggae. This first exploration of the dancehall pulls from the Old School Dancehall tunes from the late 1970s through the 1990s. The kings of the dancehall make the list here, including Barrington Levy, Shabba Ranks, Cocoa Tea, Tenor Saw, Yellowman, and Super Cat. Unique voices, fat riddims, and heavy bass lines make for great dancehall reggae music.

From the creative stylings of Junior ReidTiger and Cutty Ranks to the rough-shod rhyming of Bounty Killer, Capleton, and Buju Banton to the smooth silky voices of Beres Hammond, Sanchez, and Frankie Paul, dancehall music filled the air in Jamaica where its was played over thundering soundsystems with speakers stacked mountain high. This collection of old school dancehall songs includes favorites from Half Pint, Johnny Ousborne, Eek-A-Mouse, Ninjaman, and Chaka Demus & Pliers, as well as the deeper cuts from classic dancehall artists like Early B, Anthony Red Rose, Brigadier Jerry and Super Beagle.

The selector has also made lists of dancehall reggae music, including Classic Dancehall Tracks, New School Danechall Selections, and ruff riding Ragga singles. Please comment on the selections.

World of Reggae Music Collection: Boss Deejays

BOSS DEEJAYS

In this edition of the World of Reggae Music Collection the selector focuses in on the boss deejays. This list is heavily laden with the top ranking deejays U Roy, Big Youth, Dennis Alcapone, and I Roy. In this edition U-Roy “The Originator” especially shines. Also the unique stylings of Yellowman, Eek-A-Mouse, Ranking Joe, and Trinity appear alongside the famous female deejay Sister Nancy. And make sure to check out the deejay Early B and his amazing story songs “History Of Jamaica” and “Bible Story.” The boss deejays are the fathers and mothers of rap music. They were the first to take instrumental versions and dubs, and toast over the top of them. Thus these toasters are not only important to the foundations of reggae music, but also to the roots of rap and hip-hop music. Plus if you listen closely there is a message. There are many life lessons that can be learned from these Boss Deejays. Yes in fact these toasters make good teachers. So Remember when you ride like lightning, you crash like thunder. And if you can’t be good then you must be careful.

World of Reggae Music Collection: Boss Deejays

World of Reggae Music Collection–Roots and Culture: Political Reggae

The World of Reggae Music Collection: Roots and Cultrue Political Reggae Often reggae carries a strong political message wrapped inside its intoxicating vibes. Reggae superstars Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, Yellowman, Eek-A-Mouse, and Bob Marley and The Wailers have a broad knowledge of the plight of the poor people around the world. In turn these reggae artists have fashioned brilliant protest songs that bring attention to international social injustice. From Jimmy Cliff’sVietnam” to Ziggy Marley And The Melody Makersperforming “Namibia” decades of reggae artists have expressed their political viewpoints through music. One of my favorite American musicians that often drenches his original music in reggae sounds, Michael Franti, leads the California-based band Spearhead with hard-hitting lyrics. His message of love trumps the political message, but his songs are filled with deep knowledge of social, economic, and political issues. Micheal Franti & Spearhead are a must in this edition of Roots and Culture. From modern dancehall artists like Busy SignalMavado, I-Wayne, Perfect, Sizzla, and Alborosie to the classic reggae bands like the The Mighty Diamonds, Steel Pulse, and Black Uhuruthe mainstream political worldview often comes into question in these great reggae tracks. And there were strong positive-minded individuals from Jamaica like Hugh Mundell and Jacob Miller that pointed out the of the hypocrisies of these bad-minded politicians. Some reggae artists even called for social revolution in their music. Peter Tosh said it best in his song “Equal Rights” “I don’t want no peace. I want equal rights and justice. Gotta to get it. Equal rights and justice.”
